Heat pump installation,
planned properly.

A heat pump replaces a furnace and AC with one system for heating and cooling. Good results come from sizing, layout and electrical planning done before equipment is ordered.

01 / HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION

Load calculation and sizing

Equipment is sized to the house, not to the old furnace label. Oversized systems short cycle and cost more.

02 / HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION

Ducted or ductless

Keep existing ducts when they are in good shape, or go ductless where ducts are missing, leaky or impossible to run.

03 / HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION

Electrical capacity check

HAXX electricians review the panel and service before the install, so a surprise panel upgrade does not appear mid-project.

04 / HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION

Brands we install

Mitsubishi Electric and American Standard systems, among others, matched to the home and budget.

05 / HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION

Permits and inspection

HAXX pulls the mechanical and electrical permits and meets the city inspector.

Rebate paperwork

We point you to the rebates your address qualifies for and provide the equipment documentation programs ask for.

SAN FRANCISCO DETAILS

Planning a heat pump
in San Francisco.

San Francisco has some of the oldest housing in the country, and many homes heat with aging gas furnaces. A heat pump adds cooling for the hot days that now reach the city.

01

CleanPowerSF bill credits

CleanPowerSF, run by the SFPUC, offers bill credits for heat pumps that replace gas furnaces, including central, window, through-the-wall and air-to-water systems. Credits are first come, first served, so confirm terms before you sign.

02

Major renovation rule

Since July 1, 2026, San Francisco requires electric space and water heating when a major renovation also replaces those systems for the whole building. A simple furnace swap outside a major renovation is not covered by that ordinance.

03

Fitting older houses

Victorians and Edwardians often lack room for new ducts. Ductless heads, slim-ducted units or reuse of existing ducts are compared at the estimate.

GOOD TO KNOW

Heat Pump Installation in San Francisco: questions, answered.

Are there heat pump incentives in San Francisco?

Yes. CleanPowerSF offers bill credits for heat pumps that replace gas heating, and BayREN Home+ rebates may also apply. Amounts and availability change, so verify before you sign.

Who pulls the permit?

HAXX does. Mechanical and electrical permits are filed with the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection, and HAXX meets the inspector.

Can a heat pump heat my house on cold nights?

Yes. Bay Area winters are mild, and correctly sized heat pumps heat comfortably through them. Sizing and duct condition matter more than the brand.

How long does an installation take?

Most single-system replacements take one to three days on site. Permits, equipment lead times and any electrical work add to the overall timeline.
