Most people know DeWalt for the yellow-and-black power tools on every job site. But DeWalt now makes something else, too: home EV chargers. We recently installed one in Los Altos, and we liked it so much we wanted to share it.
DeWalt isn’t just power tools anymore
DeWalt has added a line of residential Level 2 EV chargers, made under the DeWalt brand. The line includes portable chargers and wall-mounted models. The wall-mounted units are available in 40-amp and 48-amp versions and connect to the DeWalt EV Charger app over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The job: a charger that suddenly stopped working
A client in Los Altos called us because their EV charger had simply stopped charging one day. Rather than repair the old unit, the client decided to replace it, and was excited to switch to a DeWalt.
We mounted the new DeWalt charger on the exterior wall and hardwired it, with the wiring protected in flexible conduit along the wall.

What we liked about it
To be honest, we really liked this charger. It looks bold and modern, it’s solidly built, and you can feel the power in it. The big handles on the sides make it look like it belongs right next to a set of DeWalt tools.
- A clear built-in screen. The display shows the charging current, voltage and how much energy has been used in the session.
- App control. The charger connects to the DeWalt app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so you can check and manage charging from your phone.
- Made for outdoor use. It’s built to be installed indoors or outdoors, like this one on an exterior wall.
- A rugged look. If you want an EV charger that stands out instead of hiding, this one does.

Choosing the right charger for your home
A good-looking charger is only half the job. Before you choose a charger, it’s worth checking a few things:
- Your panel capacity. A 40- or 48-amp charger needs a dedicated circuit, and your panel has to be able to handle the extra load.
- Hardwired or plug-in. Hardwiring means fewer connections, which means fewer places for heat to build up over time.
- Where you park. Mount the charger where the cable reaches the car easily, without stretching or tripping hazards.
- Licensed installation. EV chargers draw a lot of power for hours at a time. Have a licensed electrician install it, with a permit.
Frequently asked questions
Does DeWalt make EV chargers?
Yes. DeWalt now offers residential Level 2 EV chargers, including portable models and wall-mounted 40-amp and 48-amp models with app control.
Can you replace my old EV charger with a new one?
Yes. If your charger has stopped working, we can check the circuit and replace the charger with a new model of your choice, like the DeWalt in this project.
Should an EV charger be hardwired?
Hardwiring is the setup we recommend for most homes. It has fewer connections than a plug-in setup, so there are fewer points that can loosen and overheat over time.
